Columbia Fire & Rescue: A Legacy of Service and Excellence
Columbia Fire & Rescue (CFR) has built a proud legacy of service that spans more than 150 years, beginning with its humble origins as a volunteer fire department in 1868. Today, CFR continues that tradition of excellence, providing professional fire protection and emergency response services to more than 48,000 residents across a 40-square-mile area within the City of Columbia.
The department responds to more than 5,500 calls annually, covering a wide range of emergencies including fire suppression, medical response, rescue operations, and hazardous material incidents. These emergency operations are carried out from five strategically located fire stations, staffed by highly trained personnel and equipped with a modern fleet that includes three ladder trucks, three engine companies, one tanker, one medical rescue unit, and two rescue boats.
CFR is recognized as one of the top fire service organizations in Tennessee, having earned a prestigious Class 1 rating from the National Insurance Services Office (ISO)—the highest possible rating for fire protection services. At the time of the award, Columbia Fire & Rescue was the only department in the state to receive this honor and remains one of just eight departments in Tennessee to currently hold the distinction. This Class 1 rating brings significant advantages to the Columbia community, including the potential for reduced property insurance premiums and greater appeal to businesses considering relocation or investment in the area. This achievement reflects the tireless dedication of CFR personnel and the ongoing support of City leadership.
In addition to emergency response, Columbia Fire & Rescue plays a critical role in community risk reduction. The department has developed a variety of programs aimed at empowering the public with the knowledge and resources needed to prevent avoidable hazards. These initiatives help reduce the risk of loss of life and property through proactive education, outreach, and engagement.
With a legacy built on service, professionalism, and a commitment to public safety, Columbia Fire & Rescue continues to uphold its mission to protect life, property, and the community it proudly serves.
