Do I Need a Fire Permit?
This helps applicants determine if a Fire Plan Review is required under the 2024 International Fire Code (IFC). Final determination is made by the Fire Code Official. Local amendments may apply.
When a Fire Plan Review is Required
A plan review is required when work affects the building, fire protection systems, or life safety features.
You WILL need plans if your project includes any of the following:
- Installing or modifying an underground fire sprinkler line
- Installing or modifying a FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM AND/OR STANDPIPE SYSTEM
- Installing or modifying a fire alarm system
- Installing a fire pump or fire water tank
- Installing commercial cooking equipment (hood & suppression)
- Installing a paint booth or spray finishing operation
- Creating high-piled storage or installing storage racks
- Adding hazardous materials control areas
- Installing emergency generators or fuel systems
- Installing Emergency Responder Radio Coverage Systems
- Installing energy storage systems
- Installing or modifying plant extraction systems
- Installing private fire hydrants
- Installing temporary membrane structures and tents
- Installing gates or barricades across fire apparatus roads

Typical Plan Review Submittals
- Site plan and floor plan
- Fire protection system drawings (if applicable)
- Life safety/code analysis
- Equipment cut sheets
- Hazardous Materials Inventory Statement (if applicable)
Fire permits are required by IFC Section 105.
Failure to obtain required permits may result in stop-work orders, delays or enforcement action.
