Robert Abernathy, born in Columbia, TN in 1918, began playing sandlot games in Nashville with the N & T Tigers and other teams until 1940 when he moved to California to work in the defense industry during World War II. He played with semipro teams until he signed with the Kansas City Monarchs in 1945.
